マウスの脳で見られる様々な神経細胞のセルタイプが生まれる分子メカニズムとその存在意義を明らかにしました。マウス体性感覚野に多く存在する有棘星状細胞(spiny stellate neuron)は、感覚情報を処理する際に重要な役割を果たし、特に環境からの情報を感知しやすく、敏感に反応します。これらの神経細胞は、外部刺激の入力情報と発生過程とが関連していると考えられていますが、その分子的なメカニズムについては不明でした。
